The City of Alexandria, Va., is seeking bids from companies for the construction of a municipal fiber-optic network. City officials want a network can support video, data, and voice data transportation at public facilities. The city expects the network will also increase consumer options for cable, voice, and broadband services. "The city is planning to seek new franchisees who could lease excess capacity on the citys new fiber-optic network and provide service to residents and businesses, according to the city website.
