Elkhart County, Ind. will soon test a plan to extend fiber-optic cables to homes in the county. County commissioners have approved a resolution that established a pricing model for a pilot fiber-to-the-home project. The county already owns and maintains a network of dark fiber-optic lines. The program would see homeowners pay to have fiber-optic lines installed and a fee to lease it on top of a fee to subscribe for Internet service through service providers. The resolution approved by county officials sets a circuit lease at $20 a month.
