The U.S. Justice Department has announced that it does not support a project that would connect the United States and China via an undersea cable. That project is being led by Google, Facebook , and Beijing-based Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group. The government has concerns over the project because of the Chinese investor and the direct link to Hong Kong the cable would create. Crews have already installed a majority of the line, but a temporary permit approving the work could expire soon. A rejection of an application would signal ongoing distrust of China and would be the first such project to be denied due to national security reasons.
