What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the fiber industry today? What is your advice for overcoming it?
The biggest challenge facing our industry is that many communities do yet have fiber broadband services. We are seeing communities across the nation realizing that they are not getting economic development projects and the jobs that come with these projects if they don’t have Gigabit speeds with a fiber optic infrastructure. Further these communities are falling further and further behind in educations, healthcare and government services. What we can do to change this is to encourage State legislators to reduce the barriers and cost to fiber deployment, encourage our Federal agencies to provide more funding to these communities and to encourage these communities to reach out to the Fiber Broadband Association for help in advocacy, use of our Community Tool Box and engage our membership for advice and support.
What excites you about the future of fiber?
Every year our members are innovating to make fiber optics more economical to deploy, technology innovations on the electronics and lasers to deliver more bandwidth and capacity and process and procedure innovations to lower the cost and speed deployment.
What’s your favorite show to stream with your fiber connection?
I not a big TV watcher but what excites me about fiber connections is surge in the gaming and competitive gaming viewership. Online competitive video gaming is becoming a Varsity sport at many high schools and professional video gaming viewership is expect to surpass the audience of all professional sports viewership with the exception of the NFL over the next 18 months. While I don’t play or watch video games, I am excited about how the availability of massive fiber optic bandwidth is changing the way people work, live an play.
