West Des Moines, Iowa, will invest $40 million to help bring a Google Fiber network to the city. While Google Fiber will be the first licensee for the network, city officials expect other companies to be licensed at a later date. The goal is to build a network with universal high-speed internet access at competitive prices. Google Fiber offers speeds of one gigabit per second and are much faster than the average broadband connection in the U.S. Google Fiber is currently available in 18 other U.S. cities. Construction on the network is scheduled to begin later this year.
